5 basic questions: a short guide to personalising t-shirts

Are you thinking about launching your own apparel brand? Or maybe you want to print some t-shirts for a promotional event. In any case, choosing a printing company that will produce your custom clothing is one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make. When it comes to the printing technique, types of ink, t-shirts brands, shipping cost or turnaround time, every company has their own advantages. What questions should you ask yourselves before deciding on a printer?

1.- What printing techniques do we use?

Screen-printing

It’s the most popular method among all brands and designers. It became quite popular during the 60’s and the results are just great. For screen-printing we use different frames, one per colour and the printer technician pushes the ink onto the t-shirt. If the design has more than one colour, then each frame will be layered one at a time to create the final design. Screen-printing is quite an automated method, but it still has its’ authentic artisan aspects.
It’s the ideal technique if your design doesn’t have shading or a lot of details. Remember that the more colours your design has, the more expensive it will be to print via screen-printing.

Screen printing

Digital printing

If your artwork has a lot of shading, different tones and minute details, such as a photo, digital printing is the perfect technique for you. High resolution results and perfect quality. The main disadvantage of digital printing is that is a bit more expensive that screen-printing and it can only be used in apparel such as t-shirts, some bags and hoodies. We recommend digital printing for small orders and really detailed designs that would be impossible to print by any other method.

Besides screen-printing and digital printing, we also offer techniques to personalise such as CAD-cut vinyl, rhinestone, digital transfer, full print, embroidery or classic transfer. Don’t hesitate to ask us what method will work better according to your design and needs.

2.- What kind of ink do we use?

We only use 100% phthalate-free ink. Our commitment to the environment is very important for us. Phthalates inks are chemically harmful paints that have been used for many years to customise t-shirts and apparel. Unfortunately there are some companies that still use it.

We use the Pantone Uncoated range as a reference. Printing on cloth materials is quite different to printing on paper; however we always try to get as close as possible to the real thing!

3.- What t-shirt brand should I choose?

You always have to consider if your personalised t-shirts are for selling or if you’ll use it for friends, events or your business’ staff. Our catalogue is very complete, with a lot of different kinds of t-shirts with regards to textile, prices, colours and sizes. We’re sure to have one that fits your project!

Our best-sellers are the magnificent Sol’s, Fruit of the Loom, Roly and Gildan T-shirts. We also work with brands such as B&C, American Apparel, Anvil and JHK.

If you are an eco-warrior or concerned about the environment, Continental Organic range of T-shirts are manufactured through a process that minimizes negative environmental impacts.

The choice is yours!

4.- What is our turnaround time?

Our turnaround times always depend on the t-shirt and printing technique to personalise you choose and of course of the amount of t-shirts you order. We can process huge orders in record times if necessary – urgent fees apply.

Rhinestone stamping

Rhinestone stamping is one of the most striking techniques we offer to personalise your t-shirts.

Rhinestone transfer consists of creating designs by putting small pieces of crystal or metal diamanté stones (tacks) together, that gives quite an original effect to your tee. You’ve probably seen it a lot on souvenir t-shirts or in fashion shops. It’s one of the most classic ways to make a personalised t-shirt!

Touristic tees rhinestone

There are so many ways you can create fantastic personalised T-shirts with Rhinestone.

Individual rhinestone tacks come in a variety of sizes and colours so you get to play around a lot with the design possibilities and you can combine it in multiple ways to create shiny and really colourful designs. You can even mix it with screen-printing if you want to achieve a more professional result.

The price for making personalised t-shirts with rhinestone depends exclusively on how many tacks we need to use. So, in order to be able to send you a quote, first we will need to see your design. It probably won’t be as economic as screen-printing, but you’ll be surprised to know that it’s not as expensive as you may think!

So, what do you have to take into consideration with rhinestone transfer?

  • Lots of different colours, sizes and forms available.
  • Minimum order: 10 articles.
  • It can be used on cotton, polyester or a blend of the two.
  • Take care to wash rhinestone clothing in cold water and turn the t-shirt inside out.
  • Delivery in 10-20 days.

If you want to get an idea on how we adapt a design to the so-called Swarovski technique, here are some examples. Let us inspire you!

A good option is combining different tack sizes in order to create human faces or animals, like they did on these Rhinestone-customised t-shirts:

Another fantastic idea that some have had: selling personalised T-shirts to earn money for schools, excursions, end-of-year trips, supplies, clubs etc.

DGT printing on t-shirts: Kornit

Our Kornit printer is without a doubt the best printer for DTG or digital printing on t-shirts. It allows high-definition results with shading, minute details and multiple tones, which you cannot get with screen-printing. And at a reasonable price!

Kornit digital printing

DTG personalised textile

Digital printing

The Kornit is literally a printer (think inkjet) so it does have a few limitations. It cannot print metallic or fluorescent colours and the final result may not be an absolute copy of the original design, especially when it comes to photos. Direct-to-garment printing gives a high quality result, but it will never be exactly the same.

To get the best results with digital printing, it’s ideal is to send us your designs in JPG, TIFF, PDF or vector format, always with a transparent background. The better quality the image, the more precise the printing. Seems logical, doesn’t it?

Personalised totebags dtg

If you need to see a preview, it’s possible for us to send you a pic by e-mail. Don’t hesitate to contact us with any doubts you have or if you’re worried about the quality, get in touch and we can discuss the different possibilities.

There a few conditions for digital printing, because it’s quite a laborious technique and it’s not as fast as screen-printing, especially if it’s a large order.

  • Minimum order: 10 t-shirts.
  • We always recommend choosing a good quality t-shirt for DTG, like Sol’s or Gildan.
  • Digital printing is always on the front or the back of the t-shirt; we can’t print on the sleeves.
  • We can also print on polo tshirt. DTG technique look specially brilliant on the white ones!
  • It is not possible to print using DTG on lycra, polyester, nylon…
  • We can print on totebags, as long as the material is good quality.
  • Delivery time will depend on the amount of t-shirts you order.

There are some amazing and cool designs, impossible to print with any other technique. As you can see, the quality its simply breathtaking. We didn’t lie to you when we said that the Kornit is the best printer ever, did we?

Personalised T-shirts for events: Elite Model Look

This year we’ve been fortunate enough to present personalised T-shirts for the Spanish Elite Model Look casting event which took place in March this year in various cities all over Spain, looking for talented young people who’ve got what it takes to make it in the modelling world.

For their customised tees, Elite chose to order 600 black T-shirts to be printed with their logo in 1 colour screen-printing and as you can see here from the line-up of contestants, the t-shirts turned out perfect:

One positive aspect of many of the t-shirts in our online catalogue is the possibility of choosing a t-shirt for men which can be used for women and kids too or choosing a model which even has it’s own version for men, women and kids.

For example, just like this order, from our French supplier Sols:

The model of T-shirt chosen is a medium quality T-shirt which can either be used for large orders or smaller more urgent orders because it’s one of our star products.

For this and most 1-colour designs, we usually recommend screen-printing as the most cost-effective technique which luckily also gives great results and is long-lasting!

Personalised t-shirts events

The classic black and white style is perfect for adding a touch of class to your event, as those who attended will surely already be aware of! The perfect addition to a fashion-themed competition.

Due to the long-lasting printing and the good quality tees these items will be a great reminder for all the participants. 🙂

Sublimation on colour t-shirts

Traditionally, textile sublimation is only used for white, 100% polyester T-shirts. However, we are now able to use textile sublimation on colour T-shirts in the following cases:

  • When the colour for printing is black or dark
  • When the exact colour for printing isn’t the priority

The T-shirt must of course still be 100% polyester for sublimation printing to work but it can be done! We recommend choosing light or bright-coloured T-shirts and strongly advise against black or dark-coloured clothing as we cannot guarantee good results.

Take a look at these personalised technical T-shirts created for the Kochersberg trail in France:

Personalised sport tshirts
Sublimated sports t-shirt

The main advantage of sublimation printing is that these sports tees remain 100% breathable so they’re perfect for races, sports days, really any outdoor or summer activity!

Sublimation colour tshirt

As you can see, the T-shirt chosen is a bright lime colour with sublimation printing in black to stand out and the final result is ideal for publicity and sponsorships.

The model chosen for this order was the Cam Tec 1, a high quality, quick-drying technical shirt with an original design:

Cam tec1 sport tshirt

This technical t-shirt has several colours available but remember in order to get the best results with sublimation printing on colour, we advise you to choose from the lighter colours.

Another positive aspect of this garment is that it has a screen-printed label, meaning no pesky label to annoy you when you’re working out!

Finally a little reminder of the great qualities of sublimation printing:

  • Indeleble printing – it never disappears!
  • Undetectable to the touch
  • Maintains breathability – unlike other personalisation techniques.

Personalised t-shirts for bands

When it comes to promoting a band, merchandise is something basic and really popular. So today we’ve decided to introduce you to the classic method of using personalised t-shirts for bands and other musical formations.

The music scene is quite competitive, so an original and attractive t-shirt is really important. A good design doesn’t necessarily imply investing lots of money for your merchandise. Basically because you probably want to sell it later for a reasonable price at gigs, festivals or online shops.

Most emergent bands choose to simply print their band logos on their personalised t-shirts with screen-printing, a really good and high-quality option for a remarkable value. It allows you to print your band’s t-shirt with one or more colours: up to 8 colours if you choose a white t-shirt or 5/6 for colour t-shirts.

Other bands prefer an elegant design, and they get striking results combining the t-shirt colour and the print colour. Look at this original in shaded screen-printing from the well-known French singer Pascal Obispo.

You can create original and wonderful t-shirts using the screen-printing technique, like these black & white tees made for a DJ. You only have to send us a cool design! 🙂

Screen-printed band t-shirt

The screen-printing offers a lot of advantages:

  • Best value for money
  • High quality results
  • Long lasting

We also recommend digital printing / DTG (Direct to Garment) for bands’ personalised t-shirts. This method offers the advantage of reproducing in high-quality shading, different tones and minute detail. It’s a bit more expensive than screen-printing but look at the amazing results and judge for yourself. Its our favourite option for rock & metal bands!

And which t-shirts brands do we recommend to personalise your band’s tees? These are our favourites.

Do you want to make your merchandise more appealing at gigs and festivals? During recent years, the merchandising world has expanded their horizons and now offers multiple options like caps, tote bags or hoodies. Your fans will probably appreciate the ability to choose between more than just the classic t-shirt.

Do not forget that you can also print on the sleeves or the back, so you get an even more personal t-shirt. It’s always important to stand out in the crowd, isn’t it? 😉
